Top 10 Heroes in Video Games

Throughout gaming history most games have you almost always play the role as a protagonist and ever rarely a villain. The hero is usually very noble, honorable, trustworthy, caring and fierce. But, who are the best? Who among the gaming world can honestly be considered the best hero of all time? Something like that is, without a doubt, next to impossible to decide on as gamers worldwide will ALWAYS have conflicting views on who the best is. So, I’ve decided to put out a list of who I think are the top 10 heroes in gaming.

NOTE: This list is purely based on my own opinion. These character choices do not reflect the collective opinions of everyone else on this site. MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!

#10 – Alex Noa (Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete)
Alex begins the list at number 10. This guy exhibits the classic “silent protagonist” signs, whereas he’s a man of few or no words. Idolizing a man named Dyne, Alex sought out to become the next Dragonmaster. Well, stuff went down in the game, and even though he was just a youngun’, Alex inevitably becomes the last known Dragonmaster in Lunar history and gets the girl in the end. True storybook fashion, indeed.

#9 – Randi (Secret of Mana)
Unless you’ve played the Japanese version, the US release of Secret of Mana allowed you to name this character whatever you wanted. Randi is another silent protagonist and despite being only 16, this kid ends up saving the world, but only after he gets banished from his village for pulling out the Mana Sword and saving everyone there. Yeesh…people can be dicks sometimes.

#8 – Link (The Legend of Zelda series)
Ah, everybody’s favorite sword-wielding elf. Link is another silent protagonist(Seeing a pattern, yet?), but his destiny is never-ending. Despite the game he is in, Link always shows indomitable courage and willpower…especially since the monsters he fights are usually 30 feet taller than him or more, and with annoying fairies screaming “Hey! Listen!” in his goddamn ear all the time. With Master Sword in hand(and a plethora of other nifty items), Link is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

#7 – Alucard (Castlevania series)
Though he looks very feminine, Alucard has been a bad-ass since his debut in Castelvania III – Dracula’s Curse. Born Adrian Farenheights Tepes, Alucard, at first glance, looks like a cool individual of few words and strong determination. However, he also endures great suffering because of his blood curse, a curse to roam the world forever fighting and to endure the death of his friends and colleagues. Alucard is pessimistic, always has a plan for everything, leaves nothing to chance, and will do everything necessary to end Dracula regardless of the cost. He can utilize his inherited dark powers to transform into a bat, a wolf or a cloud of mist and is more than proficient in the use of multiple types of weaponry.

#6 – Solid Snake (Metal Gear series)
Solid Snake needs no introduction as he known worldwide both in-game and in real life. Snake has single-handedly saved the world more times than I can count. Possessing an IQ of 180 and fluent in six languages, including English and French, he was known as “the man who makes the impossible possible” and his exploits made him into a living legend among the military black ops, though he refuses to claim that title. Regardless of his stance on life, I personally think he is a hero. Not because of his skills, but because he has constantly persevered when the odds are repeatedly against him.

#5 – Sora (Kingdom Hearts series)
Sora has a brave and heroic personality, meaning he will willingly risk his life even for people he barely knows. He is extremely loyal to his friends, and has been shown to be extremely forgiving to Riku (even forgiving Riku for the times he has attacked him), as well as highly protective of Kairi. Sora is an eternal optimist, always looking on the bright side of the situation at hand. Although he can be simple-minded at times, he has a strong sense of justice. Sora has matured a lot over the years, and has shown this on the multiple opportunities when he takes charge of his group. Saving the realms of Disney seems to be this kid’s forte, which is why he deserves a spot in the Final 5.

#4 – Leon S. Kennedy (Resident Evil series)
Leon gets a spot in the Final 5, for a lot of reasons. Leon burns with the strong desire to protect and serve, and life as a cadet was an eye-opening experience. However after the events of Resident Evil 2, he was snagged by the government. His subsequent training as a government agent turned him from a simple police rookie into an expert special agent. He became much more competent in terms of weapons handling and unarmed combat, specifically knife combat. He’s saved the world twice now, and is prepared to do it again(Hopefully) in Resident Evil 6.

#3 – Crono (Chrono Trigger)
Yet another silent protagonist, Crono’s personality matches that of the conventional hero archetype and he is willing to place his life on the line for mere strangers. Crono has a fierce sense of justice and honor, and will go beyond the call of a hero whenever necessary. Not only did this guy save his world, but he also saved the time/space continuum! Heh, beat that Cloud Strife. Fun Fact: Crono is left-handed, a rarity with gaming protagonists nowadays.

#2 – Mega Man (Series of the same name, dumb-ass!)
Yes, a lot of my friends in my inner circle know that I am a HUGE Mega Man, and have proudly been one since 1987. However, the number 1 spot is reserved for someone else…someone I think is more heroic.Mega Man has saved the world 11 times now(I’m counting Mega Man & Bass), while his counterpart X has done it 8 times. Mega Man was designed by Doctor Thomas Light to be able to think and feel, and it’s with those feelings that he developed such a strong sense of justice. Even wity odds and dangers stacked and thrown against him, Mega Man will do whatever it takes to protect humanity and the world from the attempts of Dr. Wily and his powerful minions. While Mega Man would normally get the top spot in other lists, the #1 spot is reserved for someone I think is a true hero and who’s death actually made me tear up a bit….that person is none other than….

#1 – Lavitz Slambert (The Legend of Dragoon)
Lavitz is a hero worth putting at the top. Noble, dedicated, honorable…all of these words can describe him and pretty much anyone else in this list. However, it’s his actions that define him as a true hero and not his exploits. Though your time with Lavitz is short-lived, Lavitz would aid you not once, but twice in the game. The first portion, he is the first party member you acquire. Later on in the game, King Albert gets kidnapped and you head off to rescue him. The group goes to Hellena Prison to rescue Albert. The group are set into a trap that makes them fight Jiango, a huge monster and Fruegel the prison Warden’s pet. After that they rush into a pathway and encounter Fruegel and finally kick his ass. The group looks and sees Albert and the Man in the Hood are off to the side. The Man in the Hood takes the Moon Gem from Albert and Lavitz, angered by this, turns into the Jade Dragoon and attacks the Man in the Hood. The Man in the Hood takes out an ancient legendary weapon, the Dragon Buster. Rose notices the weapon and yells out to Lavitz to stop but he is already in the air. With ease, he impales Lavitz through his dragoon armor, fatally wounding him. The Man in the Hood makes his escape afterwards. Dart and Lavitz share their last moments, with Lavitz asking him to end this once and for all. Dart swears to avenge his death and The Jade Dragoon spirit is passed onto Albert.

Now, I’m sure people will argue with this that he willingly and angrily jumped at The Man in the…oh fuck it, it was Lloyd…anyway, that he jumped at him and got smoked for it. People, you need to remember that he was a Knight and that a Knight’s duty is to protect the King, and that’s exactly what he was attempting to do. Now, the 2nd time that Lavitz helps you takes place during Chapter 4, in the City of the Dead, where you must fight to free his spirit from the possessing demon. In the end, in order to save himself and lead his friends to The Moon that Never Sets, he spears himself through to kill the demon. He, Dart, and Albert share one more moment together in one of the most awesome gestures invented. No longer sustained by the attachment of Zackwell(The possessing demon), Lavitz begins to lose his lifeforce and backs away from his friends. He tells them that he will use his last strength to provide them a way to the Signet Sphere and as he vanishes in a glow of light he tells Dart one final farewell and fades in with the current of light, which is actually a fountain of souls. A true hero even after death.

Most people may think heroes are a dime-a-dozen, and in the case of the gaming world, they are. Compiling this list was kind of a doozy because there are so many other people I could have mentioned. But I think this list says it all.

In closing, I’ll leave you all with this quote to marinate on for a bit:

“True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” ~Arthur Ashe~

Until next episode…

What can I say? This list has it all, although it’s Beau’s personal choice, and I respect that. Even with some heros absenf from your run-of-the-mill, I cant argue with this well compiled list. Can’t wait to see more Top 10 lists!
