Tiny & Big: Grandpa’s Leftovers Review

Tiny and Big: Grandpa’s Leftovers is a PC title available on GOG.com and Steam. Developed and published by Black Pants Studio, T&B is a 3D Platformer with some puzzle elements thrown in. The most noticeable aspect about this title is the unique art style. Later you begin to enjoy the fantastic soundtrack and unique story driven content.

You play as Tiny, an inventor who has a habit of playing a lot of video games and making gadgets. Tiny’s arch nemesis Big (I see what they did there) has stolen something very dear to Tiny, a crisp pair of white underpants. Tiny has followed Big to a desolate wasteland with unusual building and ruins scattered about. Tiny must get his underpants back at all cost.

The gameplay revolves around using the environment to your advantage. The gadgets at your disposal include a ray gun, grappling hook, and rocket launcher. The ray gun allows Tiny to cut through almost anything. From rocks to stone pillars and even musical instruments. The grappling hook acts more like a long range grabbing line. When it is fired and latched onto something, Tiny is able to pull something out of reach down or closer. This is mainly used to get to higher places. The rocket launcher is used to fire rockets that stick onto a moveable surface. Let us say you have a boulder in the way. You can/t pull it away, and pushing it is just out of the question. This is where you use the rocket to jettison it far away.

All of these gameplay elements will be used to get Tiny around the desert and to his objective. Scattered through the ruins and wasteland are arcade machines. These machines are used to give Tiny challenges. Completing these challenges unlocks artwork and achievements in the game. They also hone your skills at using the gadgets available. These mechanics provide quite a bit of entertainment because they make you think and use your imagination.

The physics in T&B are well done and in many cases you will have to take them into account when cutting down a rock to make a bridge. You will die a lot because of this too. However, dying is not too much of a frustration as there are many checkpoints that provide you with headache free restarts.

While the game is not incredibly long, it does provide hours of gameplay and it seems if it was any longer, the game would drone on too much and become boring. Having access to all of your gadgets from the beginning helps speed the game up and when you take the story into account it works. It doesn’t need to be a 20+ hour adventure to tell a good story. Which adds to the appeal. The gameplay doesn’t feel repetitive because of the length.

While the characters are loveable and hilarious it goes without saying it leaves you wanting more. That is not something that happens a lot these days from an indie title. Black Pants seems to have a likeness for humor and it does not feel forced like many other titles who try to be funny. Mixed with a fantastic soundtrack Tiny and Big: Grandpa’s Leftovers is a unique title that deserves your attention and $10. I give Tiny and Big: Grandpa’s Leftovers an 8.5/10.
