The 7 Most Over the Top Collector’s Editions

Limited Editions, Collector’s Editions, Ultra Limited Collector’s Editions. Call them what you will, these special bundles of game-themed goodies have included all sorts over the years, from unique controllers and in-game missions to clothing and figurines. And, whether cynical money spinners or a just reward for the diehard fans, some of these have been truly over the top.

The Resident Evil 6 Collector’s Edition comes with a replica Leon Kennedy jacket and a $1200 price tag, making it the most outrageously costly yet. But it’s far from alone in the land of the bonkers special edition packages; here are the seven most lavishly over the top collector’s editions of recent years.

Halo 3 Legendary Edition

Exclusive footage and remastered cinematics were included, and of course you got a selection of art from the game. But why oh why did this sell out in the UK? Because you got Master Chief’s helmet too! Hey, who wouldn’t want to run around pretending to be the green Spartan? The problem was you couldn’t: it was sealed tight. You needed a screw driver and four tubes of super glue to make it wearable, and if you got that far you would soon realise you couldn’t even see out of it. Running around making shooting noises became more dangerous than expected. For the $130 asking price, couldn’t you just buy the game and then a green motorcycle helmet?

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition

Plastic helmets are one thing, but Activision raised the bar when it included working night vision goggles with the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition. With said goggles equipped, you could see up to 50 meters in the dark. The thing is, it’s been a while since we’ve needed to see in the dark–there haven’t been many secret missions as of late, and the rest of the time it’s easier to turn on a lamp. As for the plastic head on which to store the googles – what’s wrong with a drawer? The recommended price was an eye-watering $150–although if you were desperate for quality night vision, you’d be looking to spend closer to $3,000 on the real deal. We decided to leave it to the professionals.

Uncharted 2 Fortune Hunter Edition

Talk about exclusive. You couldn’t actually buy this edition. Instead it was won from Sony by playing the Uncharted 2 multiplayer demo, as if we ever needed an excuse. The random winners received the prize in the form of a giant tome filled with autographs, an art book, DLC and a replica of the Phurba Dagger Artifact. Nathan Drake used his dagger to open the legendary city of Shambala, unfortunately Naughty Dog didn’t provide a replica Shambala’s for the winner’s adventures. Our suggestion for how to use your dagger: how about an elaborate letter opener, a large toothpick or even more clutter for your desk?

DJ Hero Renegade Edition

If you wanted to take the art of turntablism to the next level with DJ Hero, the Renegade Edition was for you. At $200 perhaps you’d expect a useful set of headphones or high quality mic? Oh no, for $80 on top of the standard edition you received a black and gold turntable. Seriously, different colours for and extra $80. And a cheap stand.

Assassin’s Creed Revelations Animus Edition

Games are about entertainment. But if you’d rather read, there are thousands of novels out there full of imagination and heart. Quality non-fiction can also be found at your local bookshop or library. If you’d rather a 256 page encyclopaedia on the workings of the hidden blade, why Eagles were all over the place in the 13th century and Ezio’s favourite colour, check out the Animus Edition of Revelations at £70 (that’s$110 had it been available in the US). We’d rather just play the game. But if you’d really want to know Ezio’s favourite colour you can pick up the encyclopaedia for a fraction of the price now.

Uncharted 3 Explorers Edition

Naughty Dog certainly enjoying putting special editions together. For the third game, the PAL region exclusive Explorer’s Edition was delivered in a wooden case with more ‘replica’ goodies. A replica belt buckle, a replica necklace strap but unfortunately no replica Chloe. A whole host of upgrades to make the game that bit easier are also included, along with your very own mini Nathan statue. Just hum the theme tune and hold him close while you think about what you could have got for £105 (or $170).

Catherine Deluxe Edition

Throughout playing Catherine did you feel like you were missing something? Was there was one persistent thought, one wish, one desire: if only I could do this while wearing themed pants and t-shirt. If you were, as well as seeking help, pick up the deluxe ‘Love is Over’ edition, which included none other than themed pants, t-shirt, art book, soundtrack and a pillow case. All delivered in a themed pizza box. Even better, spend that $80 on taking a real girl on a date and snuggling up with her. After the counselling.

I’m surprised Borderlands 2 was not added to this list? Have you seen the collector’s edition?
