Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes Review

Legendary Heroes is the latest expansion to Fallen Enchantress that adds new content and gameplay changes. The Fallen Enchantress seeks to destroy the civilizations that have risen from the ashes of the Cataclysm. Fortunately, your fame has spread and great heroes have been drawn to your banner. With your new champions, you will confront new horrors like liches, brood hunters, banshees, and the dreaded hergon. The description provided on the Steam page sums it up pretty well. While the story is nothing big and extravagant, it gets the job done albeit in a rather generic way.

Much like the original game, the character models aren’t too pretty to look at but the graphics engine has been updated to allow smoother gameplay at higher settings for older computers. Legendary Heroes offers a number of new maps with great layouts and scenery to battle it out and skirmish against various different NPC’s. For anyone who prefers to conquer their own world, Legendary Heroes also offers the ability to create your own maps much like the original game. The original Fallen Enchantress also offered players a tool to create their own skills and spells with unique effects. Legendary Heroes offers a greater number of customization options, giving players much more freedom then before in creating their own world to build and destroy.

Now when your character levels up, you don’t gain a random new skill or attribute to boost your character, instead there is a brand new leveling system where you can choose your characters path and gain new attributes that benefit your character’s chosen class. Another difference is the way that you gain new heroes to join your faction. Previously players were supposed to find them randomly throughout the world and recruit them for a price. Now once you’ve unlocked the research for it, every once in a while you will be given the option to choose between 2 heroes to hire. This slows down gameplay a lot as you can’t amass powerful armies right away, but it’s not really a bad thing as it prolongs gameplay. Legendary Heroes also brings a brand new campaign that offers a few hours of gameplay, but it’s not too important in all honesty.

An unfortunate mechanic about Legendary Heroes is that there aren’t a large number of changes to character and faction creation which was supposed to be a key part to the gameplay. The thought is nice, but it doesn’t make a big enough change to the game. That seemed to be the recurring problem with Legendary Heroes. The additions were obvious, but they did not make a big enough splash to justify a whole expansion. The new additions are nice but this expansion doesn’t seem to have the same flair Fallen Enchantress had in the main game. I give Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes a 6.5/10.
