Editor’s Choice: Daniel’s Top 10 Video Games of 2013

As we all know 2013 has been a rather significant year for the gaming industry. Along with some notable major game releases, a phenomenal year for indie games, there was also several new gen consoles released. Although my list will not have any of the new gen games on it, the Playstation 4 and Xbox One releases will pave the way for next years big gaming giants. We’ve seen new releases, reboots of series, re releases of games, and some nostalgic throw backs this year that are all worth mention. Although a list of only ten can not do this year true justice for the gaming industry, here are my top ten games of 2013.

DMCDmC Devil May Cry (PS3, Xbox 360, PC)- Ninja Theory, Capcom

DmC Devil May Cry was released Jan 15th under large scrutiny from the hardcore Devil May Cry fans. Being a westernized reboot to the popular series the game featured a new appearance for the franchise protagonist Dante much to the dismay of fans (myself included at the time) around the globe. No one wanted a change to the series, especially the drastic ones shown in the early trailers and teasers. Why fix what isn’t broken right? I myself was rather put off by the initial reports and showings but I do have to say that I have never been so happy with being proven wrong. DmC Devil May Cry was and is a wonderful reboot and truly does the series justice. Players still received the crazy combat and combo systems that have made the series famous but it was refined and easier to use in this game. Dante although with a different look still never strayed from the sarcastic and comedic devil hunter that everyone has  come to love. The games environments are beautiful, the music was very fitting and mood forming, the characters were memorable and likable. The simple formula put together in this made the game a success in my eyes and personally I hope there’s a sequel in the future.

Dead Space 3Dead Space 3 (PS3, Xbox 360, PC)- Visceral Games, Electronic Arts

Dead Space 3 was released on February 5th as the 3rd main entry in the Dead Space series. Bringing back the dark claustrophobic horror atmosphere that gamers loved in the first two entries along with several new features and an end in site to the necromorph outbreak, this game was quite frankly amazing right from the opening mission. Players follow the series protagonist Isaac Clark and newcomer John Carver as they go to the planet Tau Voltanis in order to try and finally destroy the source of the horrifying necromorph “plague”. The two biggest additions to the series in my opinion was the introduction of Co-op campaign and the much more in depth weapon customization options provided. The atmosphere created in the Dead Space series is one of the most notable things that have made it popular and Dead Space 3 easily blows the first two games out of the water in that and every aspect possible.

MH3_3DS CvrSht Bil v4Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U, 3DS)- Capcom

Released on March 19th Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is basically a beefed up and re released version of Monster Hunter Tri on the Nintendo Wii. The Monster Hunter series has never been as large here as over seas but the franchise is steadily growing in popularity and some of its many titles are rumored to be sent over to the western markets within the next year or so. After dumping over 300 hours into this title and still not being tired of playing it I hope the rumors are true. With hundreds of weapon and armor customization options every single player can have a unique character and play style. Or you could always master several of the weapons and have many styles to adapt to different creatures and situations, and mold better with your hunting team online. With several new creatures not seen in Tri, as well as new sub species and new quests the game has an immense amount of content to it, and is massively entertaining whether your by yourself on the 3DS or opt to play online with others on the Wii U. There’s not much else to say about the game that the title doesn’t already tell you. You hunt monsters, lots of monsters, and have a good time doing it. This may be my favorite game of the year.

tales-of-xillia-logoTales Of Xillia (PS3)- Namco Bandai

Released August 6th on the Playstation 3 console Xillia is the 13th main entry in the long running Tales series. Originally released in Japan back in 2011 and receiving many awards as well as breaking the record for most pre-orders in the Tales series this JRPG was long awaited here in the states. With the familiar art style looking better than ever and the combat system streamlined and fast paced, I had many enjoyable hours playing through this title. And much to my pleasure, the sequel Tales of Xillia 2 that was released in Japan in November 2012 will be coming to the US in 2014 along with several other Tales titles. Although not very difficult or challenging, the game features an amazing soundtrack, a very likable cast of characters all with unique personalities and individual stories, accompanied by a well done story that makes me want the sequel sooner than later. Definitely a game to pick up if your a fan of JRPG’s.

runefactory4local_610Rune Factory 4 (3DS)- Xseed Games

Rune Factory 4 was released in the US on Oct 1st and was released in Japan back in July 2012. Being the sixth official entry in the series, this was also the first game of the series on the 3DS system. Your character is attacked and gets amnesia which is the typical starter for the Rune Factory series. From there you get dropped into a town and in a case of mistaken identity must help run the town and make it prosper while at the same time trying to regain your memories and do the occasional dungeon crawl. Farming, fishing, planting, exploring, building relationships, going on quests, marriage….the games got it all. With many many hours of gameplay I had a great time with this hand held. Its a fitting game for both the hardcore RPG player or the more relaxed casual gamer as well.

pokemon x and yPokemon X and Y (3DS)- Game Freak, Nintendo, The Pokemon Company

Pokemon X and Y (although technically two games) was released on October 12th for the 3DS system. These were the long running game giants first entries on the 3DS system and were absolutely amazing. Introducing over 70 new Pokemon the player had lots of new creatures to capture and train without feeling overwhelmed by the traditional addition of around 150 new monsters. The new 3d battles look beautiful with every creature having there own individual movements and reactions, and although few and far between the new Sky Battles that only flying Pokemon can par take in were very fun. It contains everything people loved about all the previous entries and makes it all better. The games spacing was also much better as in your not fighting the elite 4 while your Pokemon are only in there 40’s. By the time you hit the end of the game your team will be anywhere between early 60’s to mid 70’s respectively. Definitely a big win for the franchise.

assassins_creed_4_black_flag_game-wideAssassin’s Creed IV Black Flag (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, Wii U)- Ubisoft

Ok so one game that’s on new Gen consoles managed to make it into my list and its well deserved. Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag was released on October 29th for the Xbox 360 and PS3, and November 15 for next gen consoles. Being the sixth main entry to the series, it introduced players to a new protagonist in the form of the sarcastic pirate Edward Kenway. Edward is the grandfather of Connor, the main character of last years Assassin’s Creed III. The game balanced out the traditional Assassin’s Creed style and gameplay while introducing the vast ocean and naval warfare on a much larger scale. Truthfully this feels like the largest installment for the series yet and it is a vast improvement over the disappointments I felt with AC3. The next gen graphics were beautiful, especially while sailing the open sea and taking down other seafaring ships. Easily one of the most entertaining games I’ve had the pleasure of picking up in 2013.

ys_memories_of_celceta_2Y’s Memories of Celceta (PS Vita)- Xseed Games

Y’s Memories of Celceta is a JRPG released on the Playstation Vita on November 26th. Although the game starts off with the generic protagonist with amnesia story, the game surprised me in many ways. You actually find yourself wanting to recover these memories as they advance the story in many ways that both gets you attached to the characters as well as unravels the mysteries in the game. The combat system is a real time hack and slash style, but still has plenty of strategy based on the type of enemy you fight, elements, status ailments, special skills, type of equipment your using, and every character in the game excels at one skill or another. The best part of the game is actually its soundtrack. I found myself humming along with the tunes constantly and all the music is mood forming and phenomenal. All the characters have there own stories but Adol Christin (the main character) is really the only story on a personal level that you get attached to, and the story is a good one. Overall the game is decently lengthy and a very enjoyable experience for those who love RPG’s.

zeldaThe Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds (3DS)- Nintendo

The Legend of Zelda has been a gaming giant for many years now and has spread across several systems. One of its earliest installments was A Link to the Past. Well I was beyond ecstatic when the direct sequel to that game, A Link Between Worlds, was released on the 3DS on November 22nd. Right from the intro screen you feel the nostalgia with the original song and opening cinematic that its predecessor had. The game takes place in the same land as before, although some years later. Same basic gist of a Zelda game though which is go rescue the princess. You’ll make your way through several dungeons and worlds in classic Zelda style and it has included new abilities and items never before seen to change things up. Whether you have played a Zelda title before or not, this is a great addition to any 3DS library.

final fantasyFinal Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn (PS3, PC)- Square Enix

A Realm Reborn is a MMORPG released world wide on August 27th for the PS3 and PC. It had the nice feature of cross platform play meaning you could play with people on both its release systems together. Taking place 5 years after the events of the original Final Fantasy IV, the game improves on the original in almost every way. Without going to far away from the classic Final Fantasy formula, this was a great MMORPG for fans of the series and newcomers alike. With hundreds of hours of quests and exploring, a decent amount of character customization, and a story that still grasps and pulls at players this was a well rounded if not best in the series game. I greatly enjoyed the title but truthfully if you aren’t a Final Fantasy or MMORPG fan, I would say you could skip this title.
